South African football has been left in mourning following the tragic death of midfielder Jayden Adams, who passed away in Cape Town on Saturday afternoon at the age of 25. The cause of his death has not yet been disclosed.

Adams had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making his sudden passing even more heartbreaking for fans, teammates, and the football community.AD

The talented midfielder started South Africa's opening World Cup match against Mexico, playing 61 minutes in a 2-0 defeat. He was also named in the starting lineup for the first half of the team's match against the Czech Republic.

In South Africa's final group-stage game against South Korea, Adams came on as a substitute for the last 10 minutes. That appearance would sadly become the final match of his professional career. Although South Africa reached the knockout stage for the first time in its history, Adams did not feature in the elimination rounds.

Throughout his career, Adams played exclusively in South African football. A product of the Stellenbosch FC youth academy, he earned recognition for his outstanding performances before joining Mamelodi Sundowns last year. At the international level, he made nine appearances for South Africa and scored two goals.

Following the news of his death, the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) and the South African Football Association (SAFA) expressed their deepest condolences.

South Africa's Minister of Sport, Gayton McKenzie, also paid tribute to the late midfielder, saying:

"South African football has lost one of its brightest talents. Today is a day of mourning for his family, teammates, and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a youth prospect into an international star. Our entire nation grieves this devastating loss."
